When Pat Murray realized the traditional classroom environment wasn’t helping his students succeed, he knew there had to be a better way — so he set out to create it. Fast forward to today, and MathOnline has impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of students across the world and continues to help families ditch the homework-time tears.
We can’t wait to help your child rewrite their story, and start learning math without stress or pressure. But first, let us share a little more of our story with you…
Over two decades, MathOnline has been featured in the media globally and sponsored by brands including

You’ll find MathOnline (in varying names and forms) in 7 countries, 1300+ schools and 18,000+ homes across the globe. But our journey started in just ONE classroom…
Our co-founder Pat Murray started teaching high school math at the age of 20! Newly married and working hard to get ahead, Pat also did after-hours tutoring. Safe to say, math education became a huge part of his life.
Realizing that he could be doing more to support his students, Pat started creating computer video lessons to use with his tutoring students. He teamed up with his software developer brother Steve Murray, who was then producing sophisticated Treasury software for large financial institutions. Thus the two brothers and co-founders took the first steps on the journey which would in time become MathOnline.

Two tutoring centers were established (with a business partner) where students had exclusive access to the newly created and innovative math teaching software. Due to continued requests by both students and their parents, Pat and Steve decided to further develop the program into a stand-alone CD-ROM format. This way, many more families could benefit from the program, not just families which lived close to where we were operating the tutoring centers.
The ongoing and remarkable success of students using the math program in both the centers and in school pilot schemes, led to it being featured several times on national TV in Australia. And vast numbers of new students across the country were quick to jump on board to get their own copies of the CD-ROM program — at just a fraction of the cost that many were already spending on private
math tutoring.

The decision was made to close the tutoring centers, and to concentrate efforts fully on developing the software program. And since the world wide web (the internet) was becoming a pretty big thing, it made a lot of sense — to us at least — to try and figure out a way to stream our videos online. Not an easy task given that most homes only had dial-up internet in those days!
As true internet pioneers in the education space, we launched MathOnline in Australia – one of the world’s first online tutoring programs for students. Families around the country could now get help for their kids by streaming on-demand lessons direct to their homes. Seems so obvious now — it wasn’t way back then! It was also the first time the program left the shores of Australia, and hit the homes of students in the UK — a big moment for the company and the start of the next chapter
of growth.

McDonald’s Australia approached us to provide MathOnline as a benefit to their school-aged crew members. This initiative proved to be an outstanding success and as a direct result…
A 3-year deal with McDonald’s was signed to provide MathOnline for free to all Australian high school students and schools. McDonald’s invested heavily in this world-first initiative and it still remains to date one of the most remarkable positive contributions by a private company to math education ever seen.

MathOnline expanded into New Zealand schools and homes, and we saw further proof of just how universally helpful this simple and practical math tutoring program could be for everyone — not just for the Aussie and UK kids! Today our MathBuddy program is in 360+ schools, with tens of thousands of kids using it at home across all parts of
New Zealand.
The successful 3-year partnership with McDonald’s Australia concludes. The number of students now using MathOnline as their online tutor continues to grow, and the program is now also used in schools and homes in South Africa and Kenya.

In 2013, we hit the shores of the USA, launching CTCMath with much success. This tailored version of MathOnline was designed specifically for homeschooling families. Today, more than 13,800 homeschooling families depend on MathOnline for their kid’s education.
MathOnline continued to grow globally, with schools and homes in countries around the world taking advantage of its simple, yet powerful teaching and reporting capabilities. Winning multiple awards, most notably in the USA and UK, Pat’s teaching style combined with Steve’s innovative software ensured kids got the best possible instruction and support to help them uncover their potential to learn and love math.
